Calcium chloride is a calcium salt that is soluble in water. This additive is supplied in an aggregated form [pastille] that ensures stability in storage. Calcium chloride is very hygroscopic and should be kept in a well sealed container.
Solubilisation of pastilles of Calcium chloride involves an exothermic reaction (heat is produced) that can cause scalding as temperatures exceed 60°C Never ingest calcium chloride pastilles. Ingesting or swallowing this product in its dry form can lead to severe burns.

Properties

Calcium chloride is an ideal source of calcium ions. These ions will react with sodium alginate and gellan solutions to form gels. Calcium chloride salts sold by Kalys are solely for this purpose and Kalys endorses no responsibility for any other usage.

Applications

Calcium chloride is strictly for use with alginates and gellan solutions.

How to use

For direct gelation use Calcium chloride at levels of 10- 40 g per litre. For setting baths, the concentration can be raised to 80-120g per litre depending on the speed of reaction sought. Calcium chloride is perfectly cold soluble. You will find more detailed advice on usage in the documents referring to alginate.
